St. Martin’s Episcopal Church is blessed to be located on about five acres of property in Radnor, PA. The outside area near the church building has been designated “St. Martin’s Park.” A grant was awarded to help the church restore a stream running through the property to a healthy, biodiverse condition.
The first planting day will be June 14 starting at 9 am. People are invited to stop throughout the morning. The parking lot entrances are along Glenmary Road between King of Prussia Road and Belrose Lane in Radnor.
St. Martins has been expanding the “park area” for the enjoyment of the community. It is open during daylight hours. We invite parishioners and neighbors to spend time on benches reading, using the natural space for renewal, and learning more about how to manage the natural environment right in our own community. This environmental stewardship reflects our commitment to growing relationships both in and beyond churches. Years of inattention can be addressed in positive ways. Our stewardship includes thankfully restoring that which we have been given for a wider good. We are partnering with LandHealth Institute, along with other interested organizations and schools, in this restoration endeavor.
The stream project objectives are as follows:
• Reduce uncontrolled erosion, flooding, and potentially associated property damage (on church property as well as property in the immediate area).
• Restore, enhance, and protect the natural ecological values of stream environments. A biodiverse riparian buffer provides multiple benefits for plants and animals. This is part of our commitment to the environment and stewardship.
• Promote community involvement, education, and stewardship. This includes having benches so anyone can sit and enjoy nature. St. Martin’s will encourage all ages to be comfortable finding safe and beautiful space for reflection, walking dogs on leashes, and reading at a Little Free Library.
